Background:Framing Health-2013 is a health promotion and prevention innovation that addressed concerns about tobacco use, as identified by local (Sydney based) Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander high school students. It is an example of embedding community engagement and collaborative partnerships within a university graduate program (The Graduate Diploma of Indigenous Health Promotion, The University of Sydney) to create a meaningful health promotion learning experience for all involved.

Methods:Working together, over a 12 month period, partners from tertiary education, secondary education, health, media and sport developed a series of short films about the health issue of tobacco use in high school aged students.  Messages were developed our way, starting with solid consultation. University students (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health professionals) ran focus groups with high school students to explore their knowledge, beliefs and thoughts about tobacco use. Together they learnt about the impact of tobacco on the health of an individual and on their family, friends and community. Using a health promotion program planning framework the students scripted, acted in, filmed and edited a number of short films.

Results/Discussions:The anti-tobacco messages responded directly to the issues raised by the target group (high school students) and are able to be used by all partners in a diverse range of educational situations. The short films will be used to communicate anti-tobacco messages in high schools, university programs, health services and in the sporting sector, through the Framing Health partner the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Conclusions/implications:

Health promotion, education, media and sport sectors worked to  develop health based messages that responded to community identified health issues.  Triumphs, challenges and lessons learnt all form an important part of this project. The project contniues into 2014 with a new cohort of health promotion students and high school students.
