Background:

In 2013, Goulburn Valley Health identified the need for a localised health service directory specific for refugees and migrants settling in Shepparton.

Refugees and migrants are recognised as a population group likely to have low health literacy. People with low health literacy are more likely to not understand medication instructions and take them incorrectly1, to be admitted to the hospital though the emergency department, less likely to access preventative services, may be less able to manage a chronic disease successfully and be a higher cost to the health care system2.

Methods:

A stakeholder group was established with local services providing specific settlement services. Following focus groups with stakeholders and the development of a draft, the booklet was taken to a community focus group.

Suggested changes were made to the booklet and taken back to the stakeholder group for final approval.

MHIS will be translated into two languages prominent in the Shepparton area. MHIS will also be available in audio visual media on local service websites.

Results/Discussions:

The My Health in Shepparton (MHIS) booklet was developed in consultation with local service providers and the refugee and migrant community.

MHIS is a booklet developed as a tool for refugees and migrants moving into the Shepparton area to increase health literacy. MHIS provides an overview of the Australian health care system while outlining local services and how to access them.

Conclusions/implications:

The booklet will be provided to newly arrived refugee and migrant community members to assist in health care access during settlement and beyond. Following the implementation of the booklet, focus groups will be held with community members and stakeholder groups to establish impact within the community.
