Background: Evaluating health promotion is important, but many practitioners consider evaluation too complex and beyond their ability. In collaboration with Indigenous primary health services in the Northern Territory, we have developed and trialled an innovative approach for evaluating and improving the design and implementation of Indigenous health promotion activities using a quality improvement technique known as audit and feedback (A&F).

Methods:

Experienced adult learning facilitators will guide participants through the A&F process. Working in pairs, participants will audit health promotion project plans and using iPads, enter audit data directly into a web-based data system managed by One21seventy (the National Centre for Quality Improvement in Indigenous Primary Health Care). Participants will have an opportunity to discuss how to interpret audit results and design strategies for a quality improvement action plan. The facilitators will share practical tips for implementation from organisations that have used the A&F approach. Participants will receive hard copies of the A&F tools and supporting resources.

Results/Discussions:

The A&F approach aims to enhance organisational and workforce capacity for health promotion, assisting organisations to reorient their systems for more efficient and effective use of health promotion resources. Participants will be encouraged to consider how to adapt the A&F tools and approach within their own organisations.

Conclusions/implications:

This interactive workshop presents a unique ‘hands-on’ professional development opportunity for conference delegates. To our knowledge, these are the first quality improvement tools designed specifically for evaluating and improving health promotion with and for, Indigenous people. The A&F tools are available and supported through One21Seventy, and have potential to benefit Indigenous and mainstream organisations and are applicable to all settings and sectors where health promotion is delivered.
